Black Suit Blues.

George clooney in a Black suit

For those who don’t know, I run a small business making tailored siuts. I take the client’s measurement, buy the material and give them to a tailor to sew according to my design. Which brings me to the topic at hand.

A while ago, a client of mine asked me to make him another pair of slacks, as the one that came with the suit had faded to a lighter hue than the jacket.(He wore and washed the pants alone alot more than he wore the complete suit, but the pants were still very wearable). On getting to the store where I had purchased the material, I was told the original material was finished. In my search to get the exact material as the original, I realised that black is a surprisingly hard colour to match, even in the same weave.

After some research, I found out the reason is that black dyes come in a surprising range of hues — some have a slight brown tinge, others green, some bluish. So the seemingly best option is either getting a hue as close as possible, or a contrasting pair of pants all together.

My suggetion for a contrasting pair of slacks to a black jacket, would be to try mid-gray or charcoal.

Long story short, he insisted on black, but luckily for us we were able to get the next hue to the one dat was originally used. And we all lived happily ever after.
